It is not expected that there will be a complete outage longer than 10-15 seconds, however this is a legacy network so unforeseen interactions between our routers and your server may occur, causing localised or partial outages.
Due to the unmanaged nature of the service we cannot produce an exhaustive list of possible issues. However experience suggests that issues may arise with relation to ARPing for non local IP addresses. We would ask all customers to check that they have a correctly configured default gateway prior to the maintenance. We will be carrying out the work at 07:30 on Wednesday the 23rd of November 2011.

If you are in any doubt as to whether this work affects you feel free to raise a ticket for confirmation.

Looking back now, it is hard to imagine what people thought the impact of the 4004 would be, in this tiny little chip there were around 2300 transistors all communicating through 16 pins and built on a 10 micron process, running at a staggering 740KHz.

To say that microprocessors have come a long way over the past 40 years is an understatement.

Regular visitors to the PoundHost website may have noticed that we have upgraded our bestselling server, the DS4. The old DS4 was built on the Lynnfield based X3430 processor, whilst the latest DS 4.2 utilises the new Sandy Bridge chipset and Intel Xeon E3-1230 processors.

Why did we do this? Well, the answer is twofold: the old Lynnfield processors are a little long in the tooth now and since their release we have seen huge advances in processor technology. Secondly, improved processing power and lower energy overheads mean that we can offer faster servers without compromising on price.

It was inevitable that when the new R210 II servers arrived at the data centre that someone would be itching to benchmark them. From a glance they appear almost identical, even when you take a look under the hood, but performance-wise, the new R210 II couldn’t be different!

The servers tested were both standard PoundHost servers, loaded with a standard CentOS 6 installation.

As you can see in the table, the increase in performance is phenomenal especially when you consider that the new DS4.2 uses less power both when idle and under max load.

With the advancement of bigger hard disks and more powerful processors, machines are getting more and more resources all the time. We sell some very powerful machines but this doesn’t mean that there isn’t a place for smaller dedicated servers.

We spoke to Tom in our Sales team about what he is experiencing and this is what he had to say: “While many of our customers opt for one big machine to run all their applications we are seeing a rise in customer who are also buying additional small machines to run one particular process – from mail servers to web servers, the rise in smaller specification server sales has been dramatic.”

“We also have a large customer base who use our smaller servers for testing – and eventually purchasing a more powerful server for the launch”

This is not the only reason why customers are buying low-end servers. “We’ve also seen a rise in customers purchasing two smaller servers for redundancy – with two or more identical servers you can spread the load and if there was ever a problem with one of your servers, the other server would continue to work”. Having more than one server minimises your downtime and enables you to keep your websites live.

Currently PoundHost offer servers from £30 per month and have at least 7 different server setups under £60 per month. Review our server range here

Following the launch of RHEL 6 back in November 2010, CentOS 6 was finally released in July this year, a long anticipated 8 months later. So last month, we added CentOS 6 to our list of distros available to install from your PoundHost Portal.

CentOS 6 offers plenty of new features and improvements with support for more cores and threads, plus support for up to a 16TB file system with ext4 as default. One of the most significant changes is that KVM is fully integrated into the linux kernel for improved support for virtualisation.

For many end users the lack of support for PHP 5 in Centos 5 was a serious bug bear, so it’s good news for all the WordPress and Magento users with CentOS 6 bundling PHP 5.3.2, so there’s currently no need to compile your own RPMs or use a third party repository.

For those of you considering whether to upgrade to CentOS 6, RedHat and distros based on RHEL do not support in-place updates between major (whole number) versions, so we only recommend installing CentOS 6 as a fresh install. CentOS 5 will continue to be officially supported until 31st March, 2014, so there’s no urgency to upgrade.

If you are upgrading or leasing one of our new servers, installing CentOS 6 would make sense though, however we advise you to check whether there’s any compatability issues with any applications that you plan to install.

High Performance at Low Prices

For our latest Special Offer, we are offering 25% discount off all dual processor dedicated servers, a saving of up to £98.75 + VAT per month. With prices starting from just £141 + VAT per month, that’s high performance at a low price!

We are including four products in our Special Offer with a variety of upgradeable options, so there’s plenty of specifications and configurations to choose from. All the servers include a DELL™ PowerEdge™ chassis with dual Intel® Xeon® Quad-Core processors for reliability and performance. They all have a minimum of 8GB DDR memory, two with 16GB and one of which can be upgraded to a huge 64GB. There’s a variety of hard drives options, starting with two SATA HDDs right up to four 6Gbps 15K RPM 300GB SAS one. Hardware RAID is included with all the products on offer, configurable as 0, 1, 5 or 10, depending on whether there’s two or four drives. 10TB of monthly data transfer is also included with each product.

Unfortunately, as in all good sales, we only have a limited stock available at these low prices, so we are selling them on a first come, first server basis.

For more information or to take us up on our offer, which is only available by telephone, call our Dedicated Hosting Sales Team on +44 (0)1628 777730.
