Essential Network Maintenance 23/11/11
Tweet
We will be carrying out some work on our network to improve stability and avoid issues such as those seen on the 2/11/2011. Any customer with a serverID below 3000 may be affected. The routers that host the default gateway for these servers are being replaced. It is not expected that there will be a complete outage longer than 10-15 seconds, however this is a legacy network so unforeseen interactions between our routers and your server may occur, causing localised or partial outages.
Due to the unmanaged nature of the service we cannot produce an exhaustive list of possible issues. However experience suggests that issues may arise with relation to ARPing for non local IP addresses. We would ask all customers to check that they have a correctly configured default gateway prior to the maintenance. We will be carrying out the work at 07:30 on Wednesday the 23rd of November 2011.
40 years on from the first microprocessor
Tweet
In the journal “Electronic News” 40 years ago today an advert appeared for the first microprocessor. This was a new kind of chip that could perform different operations depending on the instructions given to it. The Intel 4004 was the first microprocessor developed way back in 1970 by Intel engineers Ted Hoff, Federico Faggin & Stanley Mazor in conjunction with Japanese company Busicom. Originally developed for the Busicom adding machines (advanced calculators), the rights to the 4004 were released in mid 1971. Shortly after Intel started selling the world’s first microprocessor went on sale.
Crossing the Bridge
Regular visitors to the PoundHost website may have noticed that we have upgraded our bestselling server, the DS4. The old DS4 was built on the Lynnfield based X3430 processor, whilst the latest DS 4.2 utilises the new Sandy Bridge chipset and Intel Xeon E3-1230 processors.
Why did we do this? Well, the answer is twofold: the old Lynnfield processors are a little long in the tooth now and since their release we have seen huge advances in processor technology. Secondly, improved processing power and lower energy overheads mean that we can offer faster servers without compromising on price.
The AtomCube is back in stock!
Some of our regular visitors may have noticed that we sold out of the AtomCube server, introduced in back in July this has become one of our most popular products. I am please to let you know that we have now re-stocked and they are back on sale.
We have been working on the AtomCubes to see what options we can offer and should be able to offer boosted RAM and Storage very shortly.
